2010 Jaguar XFR, XKR and one of the best V8s on the market

About 20 minutes after heading south towards the Mediterranean, traffic on our four-lane roadway stops abruptly. The bus we have just passed pulls up on our right and an officer is standing in the middle of the roadway, waving the morass of motorists through – until we reach the head of the pack. He points at us, then motions towards an unpaved turnout where a handful of squad cars are accompanied by a dozen police officers.

We pull the white, droptop XK into the dirt lot, twist the rotary shifter into Park and within seconds we’re being berated by a young officer with “CADET” embroidered across his upright baseball cap. Our French is about as good as our Klingon, so after realizing we don’t speak the native tongue, he snatches our documents and leaves us to stew.

A few minutes pass, at which point an older officer approaches and asks in perfect English, “Do you know why you are here?” We tepidly shake our heads as he informs us we were doing 60 km/h in a 40 zone. Our wallet recoils in horror as we remember the advice given to us earlier in the week: “The police in France are very strict about speed limits. The fine can run upwards of 1,500 euros (a little over $2,000) and it is payable on the spot.” Just as thoughts of frantic phone calls, maxed-out credit cards and the atrocities that await us in a Parisian jail cell begin to flood our minds, the officer cocks his head sideways, realizes we’re a pair of dimwitted Americans and simply says, “Please be more careful.”

2011 BMW 5-Series test mule pulled over by German Police

Not extremely breaking news here, but a bit funny if you ask me: a 2011 BMW 5 series test mule was pulled over by German Police on the famous Autobahn. Initially we believed that the prototype was pulled over because of the high traveling speed -wait, is there one?- but apparently it was because of the funky plastic bodypaneles covering the car. What we know for sure is that everyone has a video camera handy these days and it’s as easy as 1,2,3 to start shooting any incidents.

This time, a camera woman from “TVNews Hessen” was on site and was able film the incident. But here is where it gets really really interesting, 14 seconds in the video, you will see the somewhat covered up interior of the new 5er, something that we have not seen in the past. It has been rumored for a while that the F10 5 Series interior will be importing many elements from the gorgeous 7er interior design.

2011-bmw5-series

Now let’s hope the German police officers will get even more curious when they will see the 5 Series with that psychadelic black and white camouflage and pull it over again, NOW that would be worth seeing.

Honda CrossTour CUV spotted testing in the Smokies

It’s been some time since we’ve heard about the Honda Accord based CUV that will fit between the CR-V and the Pilot and will take on Toyota’s Venza crossover. Rumor now has it that the CUV, known as the CrossTour, will arrive in the U.S. later this October.

A VWVortex forum member was recently vacationing up in the Smokies and caught a pair of the Honda CrossTour prototypes undergoing high-altitude testing.

While rumor has it that the Honda CrossTour will be based on the Acura ZDX platform, the CUV is most likely to be built on the Accrod chassis. No word on the engine lineup but we’ll update you as we get more information.

Chrysler tried to sell Viper business for $10 million, had no takers

As Chrysler looks to sell most of its assets for $2 billion out of bankruptcy to a new company, the Auburn Hills automaker said that it did not receive an offer for its Dodge Viper business, which it priced at $10 million.

CEO Bob Nardelli said in a U.S. bankruptcy Court filing in New York that the lack of bidders for the Detroit factory showed limited value of the brands automotive assets in a liquidation. Viper is not among the assets that will be sold to Fiat SpA in the new company that will come out of the bankruptcy filing.

Chrysler has been looking to sell Viper since August of 2008.

It said that it received an offer for $5.5 million by Devon Motors Works to buy the Viper business and lease the Detroit plant for a year. According to the bankruptcy filing documents, Chrysler is looking to verify that Devon Motor Works has access to financing.

BMW 755ih Hybrid production model spotted

One of the new models promised by BMW this year, the 7 Series Hybrid, was spotted by one of the readers over at our BimmerToday.de blog. Marketed under the 755ih name, the new 7er Hybrid production model will make its official debut at the IAA Auto Show in Frankfurt this fall.

The ActiveHybrid Concept was unveiled back at the L.A Auto Show, where we had the opportunity to spend some time with the car.  We also learned there that the BMW 755ih uses a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 petrol engine that delivers 407 horsepower and 442lb ft, working in combination with an AC electric motor that can add another 20 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque.

755ih-011

Being developed under the BMW EfficientDynamics program, the 7er Hybrid uses new technologies to improve even more the fuel efficiency, starting with the the Start/Stop technology and the part-time alternator, and continuing with the “Brake Energy Regeneration” system which conserves and reuses the braking energy to power the Hybrid vehicle.

Judging from these new photos, there seem to be no major difference between the Hybrid and the regular 7 Series models, of course, if we were to ignore the large Hybrid stickers found on the car. Inside, we can still see a laptop and cables used by the German engineers during the testing process.

The BMW 755ih will be available in late fall and the pricing is expected to jump over the $100,000 mark.

New BMW X3 to be unveiled at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show

Hot off the press: if nothing unexpected will occur in the next few months, the next and second generation BMW X3 will launch at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2010. In a way, we expected the new X3 to launch first at U.S. auto show and Detroit is definitely the best choice.  The official press release and marketing materials will be unveiled to public sometimes in December of this year.

The new X3 is already one of the most awaited new BMW models since many people believe a design refresh is absolutey needed, especially since the Audi Q5 is starting to look more and more appealing to all the consumers looking to purchase a smaller Sports Activity Vehicle.

2010-bmw_x3-0011

We’ve said it many times before, but we’ll continue to remind you: the upcoming BMW X1 will move into the X3’s market segment and implicitly the second generation X3 will increase its size.

The rumor around this new model is that it will follow the X5’s design lines, more round corners and sportier look and it will have similar size as the first generation X5. The smaller SAV will measure 4.65 meters long, 1.85 meters wide and 1.68 meter tall, offering a more spacious cabin and cargo space. A refined and vastly improved interior design is also expected since many BMW owners saw the current interior design as a shortcoming.

Two petrol engines will be offered, along with four diesel choices, but at this time, it is unknown which powerplants will be used. The “usual suspects” are considered, but BMW might have a few surprises for us as well.

Update: Confirmed by a second source, Scott27 from Germancarzone.com

Audi’s boss looking at 1.5 million units annually by 2015

Despite the global economic slump and the sharp fall in demand for cars, Audi is holding onto to it’s sales target and says the market for premium vehicles will show significant improvement in 2010 and 2011.

“I do not see any reason why we shouldn’t reach them (the targets). We are working towards 1.5 million units per year,” CEO Rupert Stadler told Auto Motor und Sport.

Audi, which delivered 1 million vehicles in 2008, said it expects a sharp profit decline in 2009 and its first annual sales drop in 14 years.

Stadler pointed to the growth of the Chinese auto market as one example of improvement. In 2009, China expects to see 6 million units in 2009. Half a year ago the outlook was just 5.1 million.

“In the year 2010 or 2011 the situation will significantly improve. There will be growth in our sector again,” Stadler said.

How to Test Drive a Car - Feature

You can’t put it off any longer. There are too many good deals to pass up, and a trip to the car dealership is in your near future. But how can you be sure that hunk of metal, plastic, and rubber you’re eyeing is right for you? How can you best acquaint yourself with what will be not only one of your largest investments, but also a trusted, long-term companion in your everyday life? A test drive, of course, and making the most of it is a simple matter of common sense, careful observation, and knowing what to look for. Read on for how to prepare yourself for this all-important experience and what to keep track of when taking a new car out for the first time.

Do Your Homework

Don’t wander onto the lot to see what cars are available. By the time you show up at a dealership, you should already know what model(s) you want and what options you are interested in. Do your research ahead of time—our online buyer’s guide is a handy tool—and make the initial trip solely for the purpose of getting behind the wheel. Additionally:

Drive your potential candidates back-to-back on the same day so you can make a proper comparison.

Consider bringing a friend along to keep the salesperson occupied and point out things you might overlook.

While you should press to take the vehicle home overnight—as many dealers now allow—to get comfortable with it and see if it fits in your garage, at least make an attempt to come back at night to observe how well the headlights perform and how well the interior is illuminated.

Getting Acquainted

Once you’re at the dealership, let the salesperson know you just want to drive the vehicle(s) you have in mind and that you’ll be comparing models and prices at other showrooms. Doing this should allow you to better focus on your prospective ride, while also communicating to the dealer that you’re prepared to take your business elsewhere if an attractive offer can’t be made.

Because certain options and powertrains can greatly alter the feel of a vehicle, it’s important to drive the particular model/trim level that you intend to purchase. If your dealer doesn’t have the powertain you are looking for, wait or find one that does. Take your time and thoroughly go over the car, taking notes and analyzing how it looks in the metal versus in photographs.

While turning the key and mashing the throttle may be your first inclination on a test drive, first walk around the vehicle and inspect it thoroughly.

2010 Lexus RX350 Review & Test Drive

2010lexusrx350baeautyrighthiangle01fixedsmall-560

Lexus introduced the first luxury crossover back in 1998 with the RX300.  From that time Lexus has sold more than one million RX models making it the most successful luxury utility ever.  The all-new 2010 RX350 once again raises the bar for design, engineering and luxury innovation in the segment by refining, retuning and adding the latest in automotive high technology.

The 2010 Lexus RX350 teams a revised 3.5 liter V6 engine with an all-new six-speed Multi-Mode automatic transmission.  New intake and exhaust manifolds improve engine breathing for enhanced performance and fuel economy.  Horsepower is increase to 275 at 6,200rpm from 270hp, while Lexus maximized the torque output to better meet the needs of luxury crossover owners.  Ninety-percent or more of the 256lb.ft. of peak torque is now available from 2,300 to 6,100rpm, an optimal range where torque is most utilized.  A new insulated engine cover, styled in the shape of two cylinder banks, conceals the new V6 to help ensure a quieter cabin, while easy-access points facilitate routine service such as adding oil.

2010lexusrx350engine01fixedsmallDual Variable Valve Time with intelligence (VVT-i) is used to control both intake and exhaust camshafts independently, optimizing engine performance at all speeds and loads.

Refinements to the valvetrain, including roller rocker arms and slimmer valve stems, reducing friction and weight to improve fuel economy.  Also helping to enhance torque is the improved Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS), which varies the intake runner length in response to engine speed and throttle position.  The ETCS-i (electronic throttle control system-intelligent) softens throttle response during initial acceleration for smoother takeoff and to help reduce wheel spin.

The 2010 RX350’s new six-speed automatic transmission replaces the previous five-speed.  Using miniature high-flow linear solenoids to control transmission-fluid line-pressure, the transmission yields quicker shifting response.  The torque converter uses a new low-speed lockup damper to enable lock-up from second to six gear to help improve the fuel economy.

When applying the accelerator pedal rapidly during kick-down, the new direct-downshift control allows the transmission to directly shift from sixth to third or fifth to second, skipping the intermediate gears to achieve the quickest response.  Under normal kick-down pedal application, downshift control uses the intermediate gears to ensure the smoothest shift is attained.  ‘Shift shock’, which was already commendably low in the previous model’s five-speed automatic, is further reduced.  The Multi-Mode automatic allows you to shift manually when desired by first moving the gated shift lever to the ‘S’ slot and then pushing it forward (+) to up shift and backward (-) to downshift.  An Artificial Intelligence shifting (AI-SHIFT) control, new to RX, sets shift patterns based on the vehicle speed and throttle position and estimates road conditions and driver input to automatically control the shift pattern.  For example, when driving in hilly areas, AI-SHIFT can prevent unnecessary shifting.  When descending inclines, the transmission prevents up shifts to achieve more engine braking.  The refined engine and new transmission work seamlessly to give you a ride that is pure enjoyment.  No noise, vibration or harshness when driving at moderate speeds taking care of business around town or when cruising on the highway at high speeds.

Lexus again offers its RX350 models with a choice between front-wheel-drive and all-wheel drive.  The 2010 RX350 introduces an all-new electronically controlled Active Torque Control AWD system.

2010lexusrx350panleft01fixedsmallThe previous RX350 model’s AWD system used a viscous coupling locking center differential to provide 50:50 torque distribution.  In the 2010 RX350, Active Torque Control AWD uses an electronically controlled coupling ahead of the rear differential to vary torque distribution anywhere from 100:0 to 50:50 front to rear, depending on driving dynamics and road conditions.  The new AWD system is 35lbs. lighter than before and reduces parasitic losses by 30%.  When accelerating, or starting off on a low-grip surface, torque is quickly provided to all four wheels.  At steady speeds, torque is sent only to the front wheels, enhancing fuel efficiency.

For handling agility and control, the AWD system increases rear-wheel torque when the vehicle’s front tires start to lose traction and decreases rear-wheel torque when the vehicle’s rear tires start to lose traction.  On rough or sandy terrain, an AWD LOCK switch provides enhanced traction performance for low-speed maneuvering (if in LOCK mode, the system reverts to AUTO mode when your speed exceeds 25mph).

To help prevent a tight corner-braking condition (shuddering) during low-speed cornering, the system reduces rear wheel torque.

2010lexusrx350headonactionleftmountaintop01fixedsmallLexus engineered the 3rd generation RX luxury utility vehicle to provide a more engaging driving experience while also making it quieter and smoother than its predecessor.  The overall packaging of the new RX remains similar to that of the previous model.  The new RX has a marginally longer wheelbase (+0.79in.) and is 1.38in. longer; the new model is slightly higher and 1.6in. wider than before.  To help provide greater handling control, the track is 2.8in. wider.  The engine’s output center has been lowered approximately 0.6in., yielding a lower overall powertrain center of gravity to help enhance vehicle agility.

A key factory in the RX model’s sharpened handling agility is the all-new uniquely designed double-wishbone rear suspension, which replaces a strut-based configuration.  Another key benefit of the new rear suspension is that the packaging yields greater rear cargo room.  Despite larger tires and a longer wheelbase, the new RX retains the 38.8ft. turning circle as before.  The front suspension geometry was optimized for the new platform and features a new, thicker stabilizer bar, and retuned MacPherson gas-charged struts.  New inversely wound front coil springs compress in opposite directions, preventing the negative effects of suspension compression on steering.

2010lexusrx350headonactionschoolupextreme01fixedsmallSpeaking about guiding you on your chosen path, the new standard electric power-assisted rack & pinion steering system contributes to improved agility and steering feel while eliminating the parasitic losses of a hydraulic steering pump.  When the driving conditions involve little steering effort, like cruising down a highway straightaway, energy consumption is reduced, improving fuel economy by nearly 3%.  Steering assist is automatically adjusted in response to vehicle speed, with greater assist at low speeds and great feel at higher speeds.  The system is boosted just right for that luxury ride feel.

The brakes on the new RX350 are enhanced for 2010 with a new two-piston front caliper and larger rotors up front, 12.9in. vented, and 12.2in. solid in the rear.  Brake feel is enhanced by optimizing pads, pedal ratio and booster output characteristics.  When you push the brake pedal down the feel is very linear and further enhancing braking is standard ABS and Brake Assist.

The new RX350 rides on new, wider 18X8in. aluminum alloy wheels that are wrapped with 235/60R18in. all-season tires.  Optional 19X8in. aluminum alloy wheels come wrapped with 235/55R19in. all-season tires.

2010lexusrx350headonactiondirt01fixedsmallWhile the powertrain has been refined and the suspension system re-tuned for a smoother and more controlled driving experience, the new exterior styling gives the RX350 a more substantial and shaper look.  It is a blend of a dynamic new version of L-finesse design while retaining the RX identity.  The sleek profile is accentuated by broader ’shoulders’ for a more athletic yet elegant presence.  Bright finish side-window moldings follow a subtly concaved line across the A-pillars and C-pillars, extending at the front and rear ends.  A thick chrome strip runs under the door bottom, and the arrowhead point of the rear window gives the look of motion.

The Lexus design cue of placing the grille lower than the headlamps, along with sharper headlight graphics, yields a strong frontal expression.  The RX350 offers standard halogen and optional HID headlights.  The plated upper edges of the front grille extend toward the headlights to draw the front features together.  The lower edges of the grille form another unique arrowhead design.  Subtle surface movement can be seen in the sculpted vertical bars that change shape as they spread forward.  Pronounced front fenders flow into the doors, and integrated rear fender flares neatly sweep around to pull together the taut rear corners.  The lower body emphasizes the standard 18in. wheels.  A contrasting black strip runs completely around the body of the new RX350.

A distinctive feature of the door handles is that the surface subtly twists outward from the front to the rear to give a comfortable grip.  The power-remote/heated side mirrors feature LED turn signal lamps.

2010lexusrx350rearaction01fixedsmallThe rear features new, larger, wraparound lamp cluster with LED bulbs, and the rear hatch is formed larger and shaper to help with loading and unloading cargo.  The rear spoiler’s primary function is to help lower the RX’s coefficient of drag and also to conceal the rear wiper and houses the AM-FM antenna and high-mount stop lamp.

The all-new RX350 has grown substantially in length and width that adds to handling prowess and more room for passengers and cargo.

Based on Lexus L-finesse philosophy, the dramatically designed interior clearly separates the interior into two distinct zones-the ‘display zone’ to provide information, and the ‘operation zone’ for interaction with controls.  The shoulder of the door trim comfortably envelops you and your fellow passengers, the clear line of the trim beginning inside the cabin and tapering outward toward the exterior.  The design imbues a feeling of a continuous line encircling the occupants and defining the controls and displays.  Neatly sculpted metallic surfaces, especially on the asymmetrical center stack, showcases a bold contrast of shadow and light.

A new, higher contrast while Organic Light Emitting Diode is used for the multi-information display located next to the speedometer.  Vibrant white characters are sharply displayed on a high-contrast black background for ease of use and a luxurious appearance.

2010lexusrx350instrumentcluster01fixedsmallIn addition to an Eco Driving indicator light, when in D (Drive), the RX350 features a new Eco driving indicator zone that displays current fuel economy using a bar graph and alerts you when you are achieving low fuel efficiency.

Lexus employed extensive human-machine interface (HMI) studies to enhance occupant’s interaction with all controls.  To help reduce driver distraction and effort, each HMI function in the new RX wastes no movement.  The available eight-inch navigation display (or seven-inch audio/HVAC display when navigation is not ordered) is placed at a higher, more distant position, providing a more natural visual angle that is also shaded from the sometimes harsh sunlight coming in.

Three innovations to come from the HMI studies include the multi-information switch on the steering wheel, the new Remote Touch console-mounted navigation controller and the available ‘Head’s-Up Display.  The multi-information switch allows you to access numerous function settings with out taking hands off the steering wheel.  It also reduced the number of individual switches, contributing to a cleaner instrument panel.  Vehicle settings can be customized according to personal preference, including personal door-lock, interior/exterior light adjustments, driver’s seat easy exit, and window-closure setting preferences.

2010lexusrx350dashboard01fixsmall_edited-1The new available navigation system on the RX350 can be controlled using either the Remote Touch device or by utilizing voice command.  The Remote Touch allows you to operate the navigation system, climate, audio, phone controls and more.  The screen menus are selected with the controller, eliminating the need to reach out or avert eyes from the road.  Once I understood the way the system worked it was no problem changing the climate setting or audio selections.

This was also made possible with this unique controller with its ‘haptic’-feedback technology, which provides a tactile response to your hand.  As you use the controller near a screen icon, the curser (arrow) is pulled to that icon with feedback from a servomotor in the device enabling you to feel it ‘click’ into place.  You or your passenger make a selection by pressing the side thumb button on either side, and the feedback servo is adjustable for sensitivity.  The system then confirms the action with a subtle sound.  Remote Touch integrates the functions of seven hard switches used with the previous touch screen, helping you to operate those functions with minimal effort and distraction.  I liked the system more than the large, round controller knob found in the BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz models.

The all-new RX350 is now available with a Heads-Up Display (HUD) utilizing white readouts.  High-intensity LEDs project high-contrast white figures onto the windshield, which are easier to read-and easier on the eyes-than the typical green-colored readouts.  The HUD offers displays for speed, navigation, and audio.  A wedge-shaped windshield interlayer for the HUD projection area eliminates the distracting printed grid pattern seen on some other vehicle HUDs.

2010lexusrx350frontseats01fixedsmallLuxury and attention to detail are a Lexus hallmark and the new RX350 is no exception.  All RX models are equipped with the SmartAccess keyless entry with push button start/stop.  As you approach the RX, interior and exterior courtesy lamps illuminate.  Opening the door is by pulling out the door handle and the door magically opens, the instrument panel lighting gradually fades in.  When the engine is started, the instrument gauge needles and marking illuminate, followed by the multi-information display.  After you exit your RX, the lights fade out at different intervals.

All 2010 RX350’s are equipped with power tilt and telescoping steering columns.  To ease entry and exit, the seat automatically slides two inches rearward and the steering wheel tilts upward and slides forward when the engine is switched off.  Upon pushing the ‘ON’ button, the seat and steering wheel return to positions pre-set by you using the three-position memory system.

The newly designed, standard 10-way power front seats are shaped to accommodate arm movement when operating the available Remote Touch, while also holding you and you passengers in place.  Both front seats are feature power lumbar adjustment.  Also newly available on the RX is a ventilation function for the front seats to help improve comfort on hot and humid days.  The shape and texture of the armrests and switches offer an ideal combination of tactile feel and functionality.

The leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel features integrated audio controls and a unique cross-section that is designed to provide a more natural grip than a conventional round-section wheel.  A leather and wood trimmed wheel is also available for added luxury.

2010lexusrx350rearseats01fixedsmallThree seat materials include standard fabric, optional smooth leather or even softer semi-aniline leather.  Standard wood trim comes in Brown Walnut matched to Parchment, or Expresso Bird’s-eye Maple matched to gray and black.

The center console box provides enough space to comfortably store CDs/DVDs or your owner’s manual.  Even with the owner’s manual, the console box still offers more than 0.75cu.ft. of storage capacity.  The three-part (40/20/40) rear seats can be slid and reclined, and can be folded down using the one-touch levers mounted in the luggage compartment.  Compact rear-seat headrests help improve your rear visibility.  The new double-wishbone rear suspension, due to its compact packaging, yield a larger luggage compartment; the width between the suspension towers is increased by nearly six inches.

The new climate-control system offers quicker cooling and warming and is also quieter.  A new high-efficiency compressor detects refrigerant flow in order to optimize engine control and fuel economy.  The new system can cool the cabin to about two degrees lower and warm it by about five degrees higher than before.  An available smog sensor is designed to detect harmful particles (CO, HC, NOx) in other vehicle’s exhaust emissions and automatically switch between fresh air and recirculation modes.

The new Lexus RX accommodates a variety of music sources, providing auxiliary and USB inputs, Bluetooth Audio wireless connectivity and standard XM satellite radio capability, which is also joined by XM NavTraffic and XM NavWeather.  Standard voice recognition and Bluetooth technology allow phone calls to be made and received while driving.  When an iPod is attached via the USB port, information such as names for the artist, track and album is displayed on the available navigation or audio screen.  The large center console storage box easily accommodates a variety of electronic devices while keeping wires out of sight.

2010lexusrx350doortrim01fixedsmallThe RX continues the tradition of offering the Lexus Premium Audio system as standard equipment, in this case a powerful nine-speaker system with a six-disc changer.  Creative placement and angling of the speakers perfectly cross-channels sound to the occupant on the opposite side of the vehicle to transform the cabin into a clear, crisp acoustic environment.  A 12-speaker system comes with the optional navigation or rear seat entertainment systems and includes two-rear door tweeters and a compact L-shaped subwoofer in the rear luggage compartment.

The optional 15-speaker Mark Levinson Surround Sound system allows listeners to enjoy 7.1 channel surround sound.  The system, a Lexus exclusive, features a center channel coaxial speaker, metal-cone midrange speakers, tweeters and a 100-watt amplified subwoofer.  A 2.5in. speaker built into each D-pillar provides the right and left surround-sound channels.  The diffusion of sound provides each occupant the same level of audio quality.

The available Hard Disc Drive (HDD) navigation system eliminates the need for DVD map discs and offers a unique voice recognition system, which can work using casual-language inputs on certain functions.  An optional rear-seat entertainment system includes two high-definition seven-inch screens, one on each of the front seatbacks.  Each screen can display video from separate sources.  A remote control allows independent control of each screen.  Rear seat occupants can also choose to listen to audio through the wireless headphones instead of vehicle speakers.

2010lexusrx350rearcargo01fixedsmallThe available wide-view side monitor and backup monitor each help provide you with a wider range of visibility.  You can check hard-to-view areas by simply pressing the camera-select button on the steering wheel or, when in reverse, viewing the camera images on the navigation screen.  An optional back up camera displays images on the eight-inch navigation screen; systems without navigation have a 2.4 in. display in the rear-view mirror.

New York's Time Square and Herald Square just got a little better thanks to a new ban on cars entering the area.

Sections of Broadway from 47th to 42nd streets and 35th to 33rd streets have been closed to cars to help reduce pollution, traffic and pedestrian accidents.

To celebrate the newly created pedestrian mall in Times Square a movie is going to be shown on a giant screen on Monday. There will also be street performers present.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet and Estate delayed

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet (convertible) was expected to make its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show later this year. Apparently, Daimler has decided to delay the launch until the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March of next year.

Reports from many German publications say that the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate (wagon) has also been delayed to 2012. It was earmarked for launch in late 2009.

What’s the reason for the delay? Insiders say that the Mercedes-Benz team is looking to keep its focus on the new CLS and has decided to put-off the launch for the two E-Class variants to free up some time.

Honda CR-Z Hybrid will be followed by Fit Hybrid in autumn 2010

The 2010 Honda Insight is the first of four gasoline-electric hybrids Honda has planned to bring to the roads by 2012. Early next year, Honda will unveil the production version of the much-anticipated CR-Z sports hybrid. That will be followed by a hybrid version of the Fit and the next-generation Civic Hybrid.

According to Japan’s Nikkei business daily, the Honda Fit subcompact hybrid will arrive in the autumn of 2010 followed by the next Civic Hybrid.

The 2010 Honda Insight hybrid, which is priced at 1.89 million yen ($19,960 USD), became the first hybrid ever to top the best-seller list in Japan in April 2009. Without citing any sources, Nikkei said that the Honda Fit Hybrid will carry a price tag of 1.5 million yen ($15,800 USD). Expected annual sales are estimated at over 50,000 units.

Spokeswoman Akemi Ando said that Honda has yet to decide on the schedule, price or sales target for the Fit Hybrid.

At this point, you guys are probably wondering what Toyota has up their sleeve to compete with the Honda Fit hybrid. As Toyota continues to fight the 2010 Honda Insight with the 2010 Toyota Prius, Toyota is also working on a hybrid version of the Yaris.

VW and China’s BYD sign memorandum to explore partnership in hybrids and electric-vehicles

During a visit to Wolfsburg by Chinese automakers BYD (Build Your Dreams) - led by the company’s Chairman of the Board Wang Chuanfu - a memorandum of understanding was signed by Mr. Wang and Volkswagen CEO Dr. Martin Winterkorn.

“The objective of signing a memorandum of understanding between Volkswagen and BYD is to explore the options for partnership in the area of hybrids and electric vehicles powered by lithium batteries,” Volkswagen said in a statement.

Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg hosted the delegation of top managers with information at Volkswagen’s Elektrotraktion Technology Centre in Isenbüttel.

“Volkswagen will consistently expand its successful ‘BlueMotionTechnologies’. Hybrids and electric vehicles will play an increasingly important role, of course. Particularly for the Chinese market, potential partners such as BYD could support us in quickly expanding our activities,” said Dr Hackenberg.

2010 Lexus HS250h Hybrid - First Drive Review

There are luxurious cars, and there are fuel-efficient cars. There are even some that offer moderate levels of both characteristics. But no vehicle has managed—nor even attempted—to simultaneously take both luxury and fuel economy to such high levels as the 2010 Lexus HS250h, the industry’s first dedicated luxury hybrid. Think of it as the Prius of Lexuses or the Lexus of Priuses—your choice—and you won’t be far off.

If any company can pull it off, though, it’s Lexus. But by Lexus’s own admission, the HS250h isnot one of the brand’s so-called “no-compromises” hybrids—such as the RX450h, the GS450h, and the LS600h—which supplement well-endowed engines with electric power for a driving experience that feels befitting of their luxurious trappings, while still delivering better fuel economy and lower emissions. By inference, then, is Lexus suggesting that the HS250h is perhaps a “compromised” hybrid? After our first drive in one on the roads around Newport Coast, California, it became clearly evident that that’s what it is.

“Mooing” Motor and Un-Lexus-y Loudness

So what happens when Toyota takes the small-car chassis on which it also bases the Prius and adds hundreds of pounds worth of Euro-market Toyota Avensis-based sheetmetal and luxo gee-gaws? Well, for one thing, it gets slower—which is why Lexus deemed the Prius’s 98-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder inadequate and replaced it with the Camry hybrid’s Atkinson-cycle, 2.4-liter unit with 147 hp and 138 lb-ft of torque. The nickel-metal-hydride battery pack and electric motor conspire with the engine for a system output of 187 hp (the 3050-lb Prius makes only 134 combined horsepower). Hustling the 3700-lb HS250h to 60 mph takes 8.4 seconds, according to Lexus, which is 1.4 seconds faster than the last Prius we tested. The HS pays the piper in fuel economy, though, as its EPA city/highway rating of 35/34 mpg doesn’t even come close to the Prius’s 51/48 figure.

In spite of the HS250h’s alleged acceleration advantage, both the Prius and the HS250h feel virtually identical from behind the electrically assisted steering wheel (which, unlike in the Prius, is thankfullynot ovular). Road feel is pretty much zero, even with the optional 18-inch wheels and 225/45-series tires. However, steering response is direct and reasonably quick. At the same time, the interior sound quality isn’t exactly up to the traditional Lexus-isolationist level. We wish it was, for as much as we like to hear and feel what’s going on beneath us, what we hear and feel inside the HS250h are the droning “mooOOOOooo” of the engine/CVT combination during acceleration, along with a fair amount of tire noise and low-level reverberations from road impacts. We understand that less weight is important to any hybrid in the interest of fuel economy—and to any vehicle, for that matter—but even we would like a few more pounds of sound-deadening materials for the HS250h so we don’t have to hear the powertrain’s pitiful drone. And we suspect that anyone who’s ever owned a whisper-quiet Lexus would agree.

Rolls Royce Ghost spotted again

Rolls Royce Ghost, the latest high-end luxury vehicle designed by the UK based automaker, has been during  a testing session. Despite the fact that we have seen the fully unveiled model just a week ago, the car in these photos is still sporting a …..quite interesting camouflage.

While we have been used to seeing the funky black and white BMW camouflage, this time the Ghost gives us a “Panda-like” look, pretty cute if we might add.

newsitem351614043458969

Probably well known by now, but still worth mentioning again,  the new Rolls-Royce EX200 shares the same platform with the new 7 Series and it imports some design elements from Phantom and Drophead Coupe, but fit into a shorter wheelbase.

It is powered by a new V12 6.6-liter V12 producing 507 horsepower and the first units have already been pre-sold. The Rolls-Royce Ghost will go on sale this fall and will be built on its own dedicated production line at Goodwood but will share paint, wood and leather workshops with the Phantom series of cars.

BMW, Lexus, Mercedes

I have to warn you from the beginning that in this article I will be going a little bit out of topic and talk about some stereotypes that I keep hearing left and right. While attending social events or parties, I always find myself in the middle of interesting conversations, some of them related to the auto industry or car brands in general.

One of these common conversations that I’m sure many of you encountered as well, is always around the myth surrounding certain auto manufacturers. People love to talk about cars based on different angles: reliability, social status, performance….. and the list can go on.

bmw-m3-lexus-is-f-and-mercedes-benz-c63-amg

Now for years I have been hearing pretty much the same old record over and over again: Japanese cars are the most reliable, Mercedes is all about luxury, BMWs offer great performance that comes with hefty repair bills and the list can go on and on.

It got even more interesting since I held this conversation with a young lady who totally fits the profile of someone that enjoys to drive luxury cars and most important, “cool cars”. To my surprise, out of all the luxury brands out there, she chose Lexus. Sure, you might say perfectly normal so far, but when asking why would she choose the Japanese brand, her answer was simple: reliability.

Going deeper into the conversation, she acknowledged that BMW are fun cars to drive, but don’t offer anything else. Of course, I let her continue since I wanted to find out more. So why not Mercedes, I asked? “Too luxurious for me plus it’s something what my mom or dad would drive, even my grandparents.”

While one person doesn’t represent a large sample of opinions, during the last few years, I have heard similar statements, from different people with distinct background, social status or financial situations.

Now before I hand over the microphone to you, let me share with you my opinion. I agree that Japanese cars are somewhat more reliable than many vehicles out there, but I can certainly say the same about BMW and my opinion is shared by many former or current BMW owners. Also, just last year, BMW won the Fleet News Reliability award, ahead of brands like Toyota, Honda, VW or Mercedes. Oh….did I mention that BMW offers more than just performance? I would add to that list, luxury, innovation and safety.

To destroy another myth, I also firmly believe that the Mercedes-Benz is far from being a brand that targets an older crowd and at the same time, their cars mean more than just luxury.

Lexus Releases LF-A Race Car Images Ahead of 24-hour Nürburgring Race

Lexus has finally released official photos of their LF-A prototype which will compete in the grueling 24-hour endurance race at Germany’s famous Nürburgring.

Although the company is keeping details a closely guarded secret, they did state that the 200+ mph supercar is powered by a 4.8 liter V10 engine which produces 500 bhp. The sleek carbon fiber LF-A prototype will be entered by Japan’s Gazoo Racing team and will be driven by a variety of professional race car drivers, Toyota engineers, and Lexus dealers.

This year’s 24 hours of Nürburgring is scheduled to run from May 21 to the 24.

2009 Land Rover LR2 HSE is naughty by nature

Land Rovers have always gone their own way – often literally. While off-roading demands a low center of gravity and muddy trails would seem to warrant hose-out interiors and body-on-frame-construction, the British automaker has long contented itself building tippy-looking unibody boxes with tall greenhouses and opulent cabins – the anti-Humvee, as it were. Further, in recent iterations, they’ve packed their products with immense electronic systems, air suspensions, dial-a-topography Terrain Response controller, and so on… the very sort of complexity that ought to be enough to send English sports car enthusiasts running back to their therapists’ offices.

And yet, the formula has always worked – vehicles like the Range Rover and Discovery (now LR3) have somehow managed to earn both Kalahari-traversing credentials and valet stand privileges. Other companies have attempted the leather-lined off-roader thing before (Lamborghini, Lexus, Hummer, Porsche, and LaForza come to mind), but while some have added the trappings of luxury to their SUVs, exactly no one has been as successful in marrying their vehicles to the notion of aristocracy – the sort of “Lord and Master of All That I Survey” quality that has remained Solihull’s historic preserve. In short, Land Rovers have always been a gloriously and uniquely British contradiction on wheels – a fact that goes some way toward explaining why your author remains more than a little conflicted when it comes to this LR2.

First Drive: 2010 Buick Regal

How’s this for culture shock? I’m driving a German-designed Buick alongside a Korean-designed Chevy through the streets of a Chinese city. Welcome to the future of General Motors. GM plans to double its sales in China over the next five years, to two million units. “China remains the centerpiece of our global growth strategy,” GM Asia-Pacific boss Nick Reilly said at the Shanghai show, where the GM stand featured 37 models, including the German-designed Buick and Korean-designed Chevy.

The Buick is the 2010 Regal. It’s an old American nameplate for a brand-new car — a rebadged version of the Opel Insignia, a stylish Fusion-size sedan that’s selling to critical acclaim in Europe, having recently been voted 2009 Car of the Year there by a jury of 59 European auto writers. The Opel-based 2010 Regal replaces the old W-body model that has been sold in China since 2003. Like its predecessor, it’s built in China by Shanghai-GM, the joint venture company operated by General Motors and Chinese automaker SAIC. GM is currently selling 5000 new Regals a month in China. (Here’s a startling contrast: Buick hasn’t sold 5000 a month of anything in the U.S. for some time.)

OnStar’s introduces injury prediction technology similar to BMW’s

Risk of Severe Injury algorithm

A few months back, BMW announced that the BMW Assist technology will add a “Risk of Severe Injury” algorithm to the existing Automatic Collision Notification service. The purpose of this system was to show a more accurate picture for its first-responders when they get to the accident scene. BMW jointly developed the algorithm with the William Lehman Injury Research Center in Miami to better predict the likelihood of severe injury to the car’s occupants in a crash.

Just a few days ago, GM announced a similar technology being integrated into their OnStar system. By introducing the Risk of Severe Injury algorithm on all 2009 models (excluding X3), BMW and the William Lehman Injury Research Center intended to influence the industry, and this announcement is clear evidence of success. The industry is now beginning to try to convince the CDC to update protocols for using injury prediction at Public Safety Answering Points (911 centers). Such widespread adoption & development are the bases on which we repeatedly state that this technology will save thousands of lives. We hope you can see why BMW is so passionate about getting this technology implemented.

To quote Mr. Peter Baur, Manager of Product Analysis, “With [this development, OnStar is] raising their ability in respect to ACN to the level of BMW’s enhanced ACN. They announced using an injury prediction based on the CDC expert panel’s recommendation, which basically adopted the BMW/WLIRC Urgency approach. Together we now have hopefully enough vehicles with eACN ability on the road to influence the handling at the PSAPS and EMS based on injury prediction. GM claims to have 4 Million vehicles on the road which are able to transmit crash severity, the basis for injury prediction. Now it is important to coordinate with CDC and OnStar the thresholds and the way the injury prediction information is transmitted.”

All these technologies will increase the chances of anyone in a car accident and we would love to see other auto manufacturers following the same path, in the end, savings lives is what everyone wants, regardless of the car brand.

A 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid will make history tomorrow at the Coca-Cola 600 becoming the first hybrid to pace a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series from start to finish. Of course, before NASCAR threw the 187-hp Camry Hybrid on the track, the hybrid had to go through some performance tests for the 600-mile race.

Toyota says that the Toyota Camry Hybrid Pace Car will be given away in a contest sponsored by Coca-Cola. So if you find a golden Coca-Cola can in one of the 6 million specially market 12-packs of Coca-Cola Classic in the southeast U.S., you will win the Toyota Camry Hybrid.

Toyota questions price and durability of plug-in hybrids

Even though as President Barack Obama pitches for 1 million plug-in hybrid electric vehicles on U.S. roads by 2015, Toyota says that consumer demand for such vehicles is limited by the price, recharge time and battery durability.

Toyota estimates that plug-in hybrids may account for 50,000 units a year and could be as little as 3,500. The manufacturer of the Toyota Prius sold 159,000 units of its gasoline-hybrid electric-vehicles last year.

Two months ago, President Barack Obama promoted a $2 billion battery research program that was included in his economic stimulus plan. During his campaign, Obama pledged to have 1 million plug-in hybrid EVs on the road by 2015. The Department of Energy said earlier this month that it plans to begin awarding a portion of $25 billion in low-cost loans to companies that produce plug-in hybrids in U.S. facilities.

Toyota has yet to announce any firm plans on plug-in hybrids for its lineup. Honda has confirmed that it is studying plug-in hybrids but has no plans for consumer sales. Both Japanese automakers say that plug-in hybrid technology adds at least $5,000 to $10,000 to a vehicle’s sale price.

Toyota is preparing to deploy over 500 new generation PHVs in Europe, Japan and the U.S. by 2010.

Source says U.S. Treasury has no plans for GM bankruptcy next week, maybe later

According to sources that are usually never authorized to speak publicly on matters but always do, a report by the Washington Post that the U.S. Treasury Department is planning a bankruptcy filing for GM next week hold no weight.

The source told Reuters that the Treasury has no plans to force GM into a bankruptcy filing next week and that the outcome of the company’s restructuring efforts will remain mostly unknown until its June 1 government-imposed deadline.

The Washington Post said that the Treasury would “steer” GM into a bankruptcy next week and would provide it with $30 billion in new federal loans (which we’re sure would have taxpayers up in arms).

Suzuki bringing three Equator concepts to Windy City. Again.

Click above for a larger image of Suzuki and Truckin' Magazine's Equator concept

At last year's Chicago Auto Show, Suzuki showed off three versions of its reworked Nissan Frontier pickup, the Equator. The three concepts were the RMZ-4, Quad and Quay, which represented trucks to haul a superbike, a quad and a boat, respectively. Since then, we've driven an Equator and heard that the production truck will sell for $17,995. Flash forward to the 2009 Chicago Auto Show and American Suzuki Motor Corp. is finally ready to introduce the "all-new" Equator with - wait for it - three concept trucks. This trio of trucks, however, have been customized by 4-Wheel & Off-Road, Off-Road and Truckin' magazines.
In the case of the Truckin' concept (shown above), an Equator has been lowered and fitted with a set of massive six-spoke alloys wrapped in rather serious-looking street rubber. So-equipped, it almost looks like this trucklet might canyon carve almost as well as the motorcycle in its bed. Well, perhaps that's stretching things a bit. The concept uses a massaged four-cylinder under the hood that probably couldn't come close to keeping up with that 999cc GSX-R sportbike in the bed. But it sure looks fun! We'll be sure to cover all three concepts along with everything else worth seeing when we get to the Windy City in about ten days.

2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Confirmed for U.S.

America is still not a hatchback-friendly place, but rising fuel costs and a plunging economy have several automakers hoping that tighter pocketbooks will have U.S. customers looking at smaller, more efficient ways to get the SUV/crossover feel. In the summer of 2008, when we first saw the Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback, company representatives strongly hinted but were hesitant to confirm that the five-door version of its Lancer and Lancer Ralliart would come to the U.S.. The Sportback is already available in Europe.

The official announcement is here: Mitsubishi will offer U.S. buyers a choice of sedan or hatchback versions of its compact Lancer. GTS and Ralliart trim levels will be available with a choice of four or five doors, but buyers opting for either DE or ES models or the gonzo Evolution X will have their door count limited to four by the factory. The addition of hatchbacks to the Lancer lineup allows Mitsubishi to more directly compete with Subaru’s Impreza family.

Bentley Supersports Biofuel

Well, whatever they eventually name it, it seems not even ultra-luxury automakers like Bentley are immune to the required eco-sensitivity of our times. And why not? We should all do our part. If Willie Nelson can start a bio-diesel fuel company then, yes, Bentley should have this. At the Geneva auto salon earlier this year Bentley premiered a Continental GT that runs on ethanol and called it the Continental Supersports, for lack of a more appropriate name, apparently.
Bentley Supersports Biofuel -1Bentley Supersports Biofuel -2And the upside is that the E85 version is a better performer, upping the power quotient on the 6.0 liter W12 engine to 630 hp, 20 hp more than the GT Speed and 78 more than the standard Continental GT. 0 to 100 km/h comes in at under 4 seconds (3.9 s). Another marked improvement over the GT and GT Speed, which come in at 4.8 and 4.5 seconds, respectively. There's also a modest jump in top speed - 329 km/h compared to 322 (GT Speed) and 318 km/h (Continental GT).
But the improved performance does not necessarily reflect the power of the E85 (ethanol) fuel. Bentley has put the Continental on a diet to the tune of 110 less kilograms through the use of carbon fiber components. There's also a new Quickshift gearbox that makes changes twice as fast as the previous iteration of the transmission. It also has a wider track at the rear by 50 millimeters.
The spy shots seen here are of the Continental Supersports arriving at the track at Nurburgring for a little exercise. Cosmetic differences to the standard Continental GT are minimal, with a different rear bumper and tailpipes and larger air intakes at the front, which improve cooling to also help increase those performance numbers.
Whoever will be driving this, though, you can bet they won't be whistling On the Road Again. Willie, you interested?
