 Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S

This is the Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S, the newest member of the Quattroporte lineup. The trident-emblemed brand plans to officially unveil it at next month's Detroit Auto Show. What should we expect?

The Maserati Quattroporte set the bar for performance 4-doors back in 2004 and has been updated with a new Sport GTS line just in time to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Maserati's first Indianapolis 500 win. A remapped version of the Maserati GranTurismo S 4.7-liter V8 engine now produces a stout 433 HP along with a new transmission management software that should help move this 4-door executive sedan to 60 in less than 5.5 seconds. The front and rear suspension features single-rate dampers, stiffer springs and a lower ride height than the standard S model. A new sport exhaust features pneumatic valves to let you know this Maser isn’t anything like your daddy’s Mercedes.

Visually, the new Quattroporte Sport GTS features a more sporty and aggressive black grill with vertical concave fins featuring the Maserati Trident logo with red accents. The headlights are similar, but now feature a dark metallic titanium finish. The interior features new M-design seats with perforated Alcantara on the center section – perfect for those high-speed trips to the office.

The executive Maserati has not disappointed in the past and we look forward to taking this beast on a quick jaunt around the block. We’ll bring you live shots of the Maserati Quattroporte Sport GTS from the Detroit Auto Show next month, until then, check out the shots below.

Maserati Racing Legacy

In 1939 and 1940, long before any foreign brands were established in the United States, Maserati took the chequered flag at perhaps the world’s most famous race, the Indianapolis 500. That car was a Modena-made 8CTF single-seater bearing the flamboyant name of “Boyle Special”, driven by Wilbur Shaw. Today, to mark the 70th anniversary of Maserati’s first win at Indianapolis, the Boyle Special is on display at Maserati’s exhibit at the 2009 NAIAS as a direct link to the newest and sportiest of its products: the new Quattroporte Sport GT S.

The racetrack is where the name Maserati first became enduring and where we today continue to draw our central philosophy: a well balanced car capable of great feedback to the driver. The racetrack also continues to be the stage where Maserati collects international trophies in steady succession – with both Drivers’ and TeamsFIA GT titles clinched in 2008 by Maserati’s MC12 to make 10 the total of FIA international titles the Maserati V12 GT car has collected over the last four racing seasons, primarily courtesy of drivers Andrea Bertolini and Michael Bartels (champions in 2006 and 2008) and of the Vitaphone Racing Team (four consecutive titles from 2005 through 2008).

In the course of the 2008 racing season Maserati clinched the third win in four years at the legendary 24-Hours of Spa race, placing three MC12s in the first four positions of the final standing.  The triumph in Belgium is the ultimate evidence of Maserati’s reliability that originates on the racetrack but translates into the quality and consistency of Maserati’s entire product range.

The 10 international trophies collected in the FIA GT championship since 2005 at the wheel of a Maserati MC12 are:

• 2 Manufacturers’ Cup in 2005 and 2007;
• 3 Drivers’ titles (Bertolini-Bartels in 2006, Thomas Biagi in 2007, Bertolini-Bartels in 2008);
• 4 Teams’ titles (since 2005 with no interruption, always with the Vitaphone Racing Team);
• 1 Citation Cup in 2007 with the gentleman driver Ben Aucott.

MC Sport Line Customisation Programme

Focusing on its racing vocation and fresh from its latest international triumph in the FIA GT championship, Maserati has developed a special series of new options named “MC Sport Line”, which made its worldwide debut at the Bologna Motor Show in Italy in early December. The new contents of the MC Sport Line add to Maserati’s already extensive range of personalised features on offer. The MC Sport Line is designed to enhance the sporty DNA of Maserati vehicles for those customers who like to display their passion for racing through a dynamic look and a choice of technical solutions that increase the driving fun without compromise.

The name “MC Sport Line” sums up the experience acquired on the track by the Maserati Corse department, whose contribution to the design of the functional components has been invaluable. The world of motor racing also inspired Maserati’s designers when it came to styling, hence the extensive use of carbon fibre, very popular among racing enthusiasts thanks to its direct connection with racing competitions.

Maserati and the Environment

Maserati has implemented a development plan for the next 5 years designed to reduce consumption and CO2 emissions, and to protect the environment.

The designs of recent models have already led to considerable fuel savings. From 2005 onwards, consumption for the Quattroporte has been reduced by more than 20% overall (NEDC combined cycle). The CO2 reduction compared to the previous Gran Sport model is 10% for the GranTurismo S (NEDC extra-urban cycle).

On the new Quattroporte S with its 4.7 engine, exhaust/evap emissions and fuel consumption have been aligned with future Euro 5 regulations for Europe and LEV2 standards for the USA, partly thanks to the adoption of an innovative metallic matrix catalyser with perforated sheets (Turbulent PE Catalyst), which is both permeable and reliable but does not affect performance.  The use of this solution has evened out the distribution of pollutant particles, reduced pressure, improved resistance to high temperatures and the transfer of gases.

Maserati also uses environmentally-friendly, easily recyclable materials made from natural substances, especially for the parts of the interior, which are most in contact with the driver and passengers (natural textile fibres, wood and leather).

Maserati cars are mindful of the “design for recycling” concept, which is centred around making cars easy to dismantle at the end of their working lives, so that materials can be identified and separated for re-use.

2008 Facts and Figures

By all degrees, Maserati’s 2008 was the most successful year to date.

In the course of the year, a new product range was introduced – the new Quattroporte line-up with both 4.2 litre and 4.7 litre models. And new to the market was also a new engine solution for the GranTurismo model-line, thus enriched in 2008 by the arrival of the 4.7 litre GranTurismo S.

Despite the dreadful economic situation witnessed by all sectors of the world economy and the profound situation of crisis that has pervaded the automotive market from the beginning of the year, Maserati has achieved in 2008 the second record year in a row. Deliveries to the final customers have totalled almost 8,600 units, which is the all-time best result, with an increase of almost 17% over 2007. What is more, Maserati’s sales were up in all markets across the world – including the United States of America.

Despite the troubled times experienced by the US economy, North America (US and Canada) remains Maserati’s largest market worldwide.  The order in which the other markets follow is both familiar and consolidated, as to state that, despite all the hardships, Maserati’s presence in these markets is an established one: Italy is in second place, the United Kingdom in third, Germany in fourth, Japan in fifth. Five markets, three continents for a truly global Maserati presence.  In sixth place there is France, followed by Switzerland, China, Australia, UAE, Hong Kong.

In the first nine months, Maserati’s revenues amounted to €596 million, up 22.9% compared to the same period of the previous year.  There was a 25% increase in deliveries to the network compared to the first 9 months of 2007, and this performance is even more significant considering that the target markets for Maserati vehicles shrank by about 15%.

In the first nine months of 2008, the result of ordinary activities was €31 million, with a 5.2% ratio to income – a significant increase on the €6 million (1.2% of revenues) achieved during the same period last year.

Detroit 2009: Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S

In the midst of automotive hell, it’s good to know that manufacturers around the world know how to put on a good show. The North American International Auto Show (c’mon, it’s the Detroit show and you know it) is one of the most important auto shows in the world, if not THE most important show held annually. I wish we were there, but since we’re not, we’ll just settle with providing you updates on all that is new.

Maserati has introduced another sportier variation on their universally adored sedan, making the car sound even cooler than it actually is. Don’t get me wrong, I think the Q’Porte is great, I’m just not caught up in the crowd who think it’s the most beautiful thing ever.

The engine has been retuned, maximum horsepower has been cranked to 433, a slight improvement over the normal 425. Suspension has been recalibrated, being lower, stiffer, and all-around more tuned for performance. The twin pipes emit a more “throaty, and captivating sound” due to new pneumatic valves.

Visually, not much has changed. We guess Maserati wanted to play it safe, which is fine by us. The trident badge in the grille stands out a bit more due to red accents, and “sportiness” is expressed through concave vertical fins surrounding the new black grille. Headlights have a metallic titanium finish, and the handles are body color.

maserati-q-port-back.jpg

Of more interest is the beautiful interior, which features new seats and a new trim called “Titantex”. Whatever. The lucky dude (or dudette) gets a more visually appealing luxury cabin to recline in, or maybe to pilot in, if said individual decides the new “Sport GT S” moniker means he can tackle curvaceous roads.

maserati-q-port-interior.jpg

Overall, it’s not much, but to us, any new Maserati is exciting, or at least interesting to ponder over. We are kinda disappointed though. Sure, the Q’Porte is the original classy big boys ride, and sure, no one else hits 60 in less than 5 seconds with nearly as much style, but the market is getting tougher. Recent competitors in the form of the Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide (which, by the way, is the most gorgeous thing with four doors ever made), and maybe even the Lamborghini Estoque (though we pray not), are chipping away at the Quattroporte’s secure base, high high high above their heads.

We say Maserati should just say screw it, we’re stickin’ a real Ferrari engine in here, this sucker’s gonna have 500 horses and hit 60 in 4 seconds. Wouldn’t that be a big “F U” to aspiring competitors.

Specs

Price: reported $140,000

Engine: 4.7 liter V-8

Horsepower: 433

Torque: 490 pound-feet

0-60 mph: N/A, but estimated less than 5.5 seconds

Top Speed: N/A, but regular Quattroporte S hits 177 mph

Mileage: N/A, but Q’Porte S gets 12 city/18 highway mpg

A Revving Maserati Engine has a Biological Effect on Women

A study conducted by British insurance company Hiscox reveals that the sound of a revving Maserati engine has a biological effect on women. Those who took part in the study listened to a variety of engine sounds from a number of cars, and after hearing the Maserati engine, all of the female test subjects had higher testosterone levels in their blood. High testosterone levels in the blood can be indicative of a stirred libido. (Or an insistent desire to try out for the Detroit Shock.) According to the study, of all the cars tested, the Maserati sound elicited the greatest testosterone response. Logically, to bring its stimulating properties to those who can’t afford a new Maserati, the company is now offering the engine sound as a downloadable ring tone for the cell phones of would-be Lotharios.

A Jaguar can be a friendly cat and then when pushed the wrong way it could be a battle that you will not win. The supercharged R versions of the new 2010 Jaguar XF and XK make their way to this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Both cars, XFR and XKR, share a supercharged V8 producing 510 horsepower and can spring from 0 to 60 at 4.7 seconds and 4.6 seconds respectfully.

With the plush interior that is traditional modern Jaguar these twin cats will pounce on a lot of car while still being classy and stylish.

Detroit NAIAS 2009: Jaguar XFR hits 225.675 mph at Bonneville

Jaguar announced that during a secret speed trial at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, a Jaguar XFR prototype recorded a top speed of 225.675 mph, making it the fastest Jaguar ever - of course as you can see from the picture the running prototype had some minor aerodynamic and safety modifications to meet the requirements for Bonneville.

Power comes from the same supercharged 5.4L AJ V8 GEN III seen in the production model. Paul Gentilozzi, owner of Rocketsports Racing drove the XFR to its record-breaking run beating Jaguar’s previous speed record of 217.1 mph.

Modifications to the Bonneville model included a remapped ECU, modified air intake and exhaust system and a revised supercharger setting. If you plan on buying the production 510-hp Jaguar XFR that hits dealer ships later this year - don’t plan on topping the electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. Just enjoy going from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds.

As well as revealing the new XFR at the Detroit Auto Show, Jaguar also pulled the covers off the 2010 Model Year XK and XKR coupe and convertibles that receive all-new V8 engines. With a displacement of 5.0-liters, the all-new AJ-V8 Gen III direct-injection engines deliver more power and performance with greater efficiency than their 4.2-liter V8 predecessor. In the XKR, the supercharged 5.0L V8 produces 510HP and 625Nm of torque propelling it to 60mph from standstill in 4.6 seconds.

2010 Jaguar XK and XKR Facelift The XK coupe and convertible models feature a naturally aspirated version of the AJ-V8 Gen III that delivers 385HP and 515Nm of torque allowing the coupe to hit 60mph in 5.2 seconds. Jaguar claims that both the XK and XKR have improved fuel economy and CO2 emissions which meet the forthcoming EU5 emissions legislation.

As expected, the new V8 unit will also find a place in the coming months in several Land Rover models.

2010 Jaguar XK and XKR Facelift The exterior changes for the 2010 XK and XKR models include a new front bumper with aluminum effects, new LED rear lights and a new lower rear body valance. Inside the cabin, both models gain the pop-up gear selector from the XF.

Jaguar aims at R8 with new mid-engine supercar

Reports from across the pond regarding Jaguar's plans for a new supercar are coming out of the woodwork, but while Autocar contends that Jag is (still) working on the return of the F-type, AutoExpress reports that an all-new mid-engine supercar is coming in concept form within the next year.
While under Ford PAG management, Jaguar cut back its development projects to its core products, but Tata figures there's more than one way to skin a cat. The F-Type was first shown as a concept car in 2000, but was subsequently shelved. However, under Tata's leadership more niche vehicles like the F-Type, which could hit the market by 2011, could make Jaguar a more compelling alternative brand to the big German automakers and help buoy Jaguar's image.
Back in 2001, Jaguar unveiled the R-Coupe concept, which could influence this new Audi R8 competitor. Based on the current XK, and possibly named the XE, the mid-engine coupe would be powered by the XFR's 503-hp supercharged, 5.0-liter V8 and would be the first vehicle from Jag with an engine mounted amidships since the XJ220. According to Jaguar's managing director, Mike O'Driscoll, the "XK is the car that began a revolution for us, but it's not the end of the story. I firmly believe the best car we could build to compliment this is a flagship coupe." If it does come to fruition, expect the XE to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010.

Rumor Mongering: New Mid-Engined Jaguar Flagship?

Oh boy — more Jag rumors! Above is one of the most ridiculous cars of the 1990s — a vehicle that somehow bears a physical resemblance to cocaine — yet a car that all pistonheads love. Originally dreamt up as an AWD, V12-powered, scissor-doored track weapon with a built in roll cage, the production XJ220 was RWD, had a turbo’d V6, normal doors and no roll cage. Translation: the Jaguar XJ220 had no reason to exist. Yet for a time it was the fastest car in the world and Elton John owned one. You can’t dream up a better ubercar pedigree. And it looks like Jag wants to get back in the megacar car game. About time. According to reports, Tata is looking to expand Jaguar’s product offering. Since 2000 we’ve all been waiting with bated breath for signs of life from Jag’s F-type concept, a sleek little number (and Boxster fighter) that will (probably) never see the light of day. Except that it just might. But more likely (we hope) is a mid-engined range topper that may be called the XE. Say one with the 510 hp, 5.0-liter v8 out of the new R cars. Though I’m sure the Jag boys could tweak the supercharger to get power up into the 600 hp range. Oh yes… Oh yes. You might even see this car come Geneva. We’ll keep you posted. Jaguar and Land Rover cut 450 jobs

Jaguar and Land Rover cut 450 jobs

Just days after introducing what are sure to be two of its best cars in over a decade, Jaguar, along with its partner-in-crime Land Rover, has announced that it's trimming some 450 workers from its global ranks. Hardest hit will be management, which will see its membership drop by about 300 employees, with the remaining 150 coming from J-LR's hourly staff. It probably goes without saying why the reductions are necessary, but here it goes anyway... Sales were down in 2008 due to a poor global economy and the general lack of available credit, and 2009 isn't expected to shape up much better. Fewer cars sold means fewer workers are necessary to build them and a smaller pot is available to pay from.
J-LR, which is now owned by Tata Motors of India, still has four manufacturing sites in England and is hoping that the government in the U.K. will offer some form of assistance to the remaining automotive sector, but so far, none has come.

Jaguar Land Rover to cut 450 jobs, suspend bonuses

Jaguar Land Rover to cut 450 jobs, suspend bonusesAll seemed to be rosy for Jaguar at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show – with the British automaker unveiling new high-performance XFR and XKR models – but the now Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover group is facing some very serious perils, with further job cuts on the way.
Earlier on Wednesday, Jaguar Land Rover announced that it will be cutting 450 jobs in the wake of collapsing sales and a slumping global economy. JLR will be eliminating about 15 percent of its managers – representing 300 positions – and cutting another 150 salaried employees from its global workforce. JLR employs about 15,000 workers globally, according to Reuters. Jaguar eliminated almost 1,400 jobs in 2008.

Additionally, managers will not receive bonuses in 2009, with pay increases put off until at least October 1st, 2009.

“Overall, the global auto market is considerably down, particularly in markets like the United States and the UK, and it’s basically because customers cannot raise credit to buy new cars,” a Jaguar Land Rover spokesman told Reuters.

Further cuts are likely as JLR Chief Executive David Smith doesn’t “expect sales conditions to return to normal levels for some time.”

Jaguar Supercar On the Way?

Jaguar Supercar On the Way?

A report by Auto Express says Jaguar is busy putting together the final touches to a car scheduled for public reveal as a concept car just a year from now. According to AE's sources Jaguar's new special sports car could be called the XE, feature a mid-mounted engine and compete with the likes of Audi's R8. It would be the first mid-engined Jaguar since the powerful 549bhp (409kW) XJ220 of 1991 and the conceptual R-Coupe (pictured above) from 2001. The C-XE name has already been trademark registered along with the name CX-J.

The car is to be based on the XK but will be even more dramatic in styling than any of the new Jaguars.
Speculation has it that the Jaguar XE will make use of Jaguar's new 5.0-litre supercharged engine and tune it for more power than its current 510hp (380kW).

Jaguar and Land Rover parent Tata is pushing ahead with a number of plans to increase Jaguar's model lineup. But at the same time the British marque plans to limit its playing field in the luxury car market to only the high-end arena.
