A report by Auto Express says Jaguar is busy putting together the final touches to a car scheduled for public reveal as a concept car just a year from now. According to AE's sources Jaguar's new special sports car could be called the XE, feature a mid-mounted engine and compete with the likes of Audi's R8. It would be the first mid-engined Jaguar since the powerful 549bhp (409kW) XJ220 of 1991 and the conceptual R-Coupe (pictured above) from 2001. The C-XE name has already been trademark registered along with the name CX-J.
The car is to be based on the XK but will be even more dramatic in styling than any of the new Jaguars.
Speculation has it that the Jaguar XE will make use of Jaguar's new 5.0-litre supercharged engine and tune it for more power than its current 510hp (380kW).
Jaguar and Land Rover parent Tata is pushing ahead with a number of plans to increase Jaguar's model lineup. But at the same time the British marque plans to limit its playing field in the luxury car market to only the high-end arena.
