The Ten Millionth Opel rolls off the Zaragoza Assembly Line


  • The 10,000,000th car is a low-emission Opel Corsa ecoFLEX 1.3 CDTI
  • Some 90 per cent of the cars exported to other European countries
  • Zaragoza plant is one of the largest, environmentally friendly plants in Europe

Zaragoza. Production workers cheered today as they placed the finishing touches on the ten millionth car built in Zaragoza: a green, five-door Opel Corsa ecoFLEX 1.3 CDTI. The Corsa commemorates a landmark in the history of the plant and highlights Opel’s commitment to the environment. The brand’s most economical and fuel efficient car is produced in the company’s most environmentally friendly plant.
Zaragoza workers build Opel’s lowest fuel-burning car, the Corsa 1.3 CDTI (55 kW/75 hp), which emits just 109 grams CO2, per kilometer and consumes an average of 4.1 liter per 100 kilometers.
The plant itself is home to the world’s largest solar power station ever built on a roof. The massive solar array consists of 85,000 light weight solar modules with an active photovoltaic surface area of 183,000 square meters. The solar station has an output of 15.4 million kWh per year, providing an annual reduction of 13.5 million kilograms in CO2 emissions.
Since it opened in 1982, the Zaragoza plant has continuously updated its processes with leading edge technology, making it a globally competitive and productive. Initially the industrial facility was capable of building 275,000 cars per year. Continuous investments have allowed the plant to increase its capacity to 485,857 units.
Together with the Corsa three-door, five-door, OPC and van variants, the Spanish plant also builds the monocab Opel Meriva and the versatile Opel Combo. Additionally the plant manufactures components for other GM plants in Europe, like the facilities in Eisenach, Germany. Exports account for 90 per cent of its production; the main markets are UK, Italy, Germany and France.
The GM EspaƱa facility has become a key economic pillar in the province of Aragon, due to the 7,000 workers it employs, the auxiliary industries that have been created and the overall enterprise development in the region. The Opel plant also participates in the development and training of the workers in the area and continues to be a large contributor for tax income and exports for the region.
To date, the Zaragoza plant has built 8,436,129 Corsa, 978,200 Meriva, 128,304 Combo, 250,728 Tigra, 153,908 Kadett and 52,731 Astra cars -- for a total of 10,000,000 Opel cars Made in Spain.
