2010 Maserati GranTurismo Spyder - Spied


Test mules don’t get much uglier than this Maserati monster, but beneath the duck-billed, hearse-like body addenda are the shapely curves of the upcoming Maserati GranTurismo Spyder. Though the long-awaited convertible version of the elegant GranTurismo coupe has yet to be formally announced, Maserati officials have acknowledged at several points that the car is, and has always been, part of the plan.

Maserati would not elaborate about the car itself, but there are a few things our ugly duckling can tell us. For starters, unlike the last Maserati Spyder sold here between 2002 and 2007, the GranTurismo Spyder does not appear to ride on a shortened wheelbase, thus we do not expect it to have a two-seat cabin. When pressed, the most a company spokesperson would say is that Maserati has been “very pleased” with the four-seat packaging of the coupe. In any case, if there are seats in back, they will likely be smaller than the coupe’s reasonably spacious buckets.
