GM turns down $3 billion Canadian bailout offer

General Motors has turned down an offer of $3 billion in short-term aid from the Canadian government, although the company remains locked in talks with officials from the State of Ontario about longer-term restructuring. The information came directly from Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who told local media on Friday that GM had not called upon the aid “for reasons that were their own.” GM spokesman Stew Low has since confirmed that the company will not be drawing on the Canadian loans for now, during an interview with The Windsor Star.
